Designing with intention, not decoration

A practical framework for visual decisions that serve real people.

Start with the job to be done

Every element should have a reason to exist. Begin by describing what a person is trying to accomplish and what is standing in their way. Good visual systems make that path clearer, without adding a second problem to solve.

Make hierarchy do the heavy lifting

Use scale, spacing and contrast to help a reader know where to begin. Define a small, dependable set of typographic levels and use them consistently across the experience.

Prototype the hard parts early

The challenging part is rarely the perfect hero image. It is the form that has twenty states, the workflow that branches or the empty page that needs to be useful. Test those moments before polishing the edges.

Build for iteration

Document the principles behind decisions. When a team understands why a choice was made, they can adapt the work intelligently instead of copying pixels.
